Romania: sets work permit quota for 2026

The Romanian government has approved a quota of 90,000 work permits for nationals of non-EU, non-EEA, and non-Swiss countries for 2026. This is 10,000 fewer than in 2025, despite ongoing labor shortages in construction, manufacturing, and services. 

Hungary: maintains guest worker quota

Guest Work Quota Maintained. Hungary will keep its guest worker quota at 35,000 for 2026. Strict regulations remain in place, prioritizing local workforce employment. 

EU restricts visa-free entry for georgian officials

On 6 March 2026, the European Union suspended the visa-free regime for holders of Georgian diplomatic, official and service passports. This decision follows the earlier suspension of parts of the EU Georgia Visa Facilitation Agreement, proposed by the European Commission in December 2024 and adopted by the Council in January 2025.

Poland: changes to special regime for ukrainian nationals

On 5 March 2026, Poland implemented significant changes affecting the legal stay of Ukrainian nationals by phasing out key provisions of the special regime introduced in 2022. The reform marks a transition from temporary, flexible measures toward the standard immigration framework under Polish law.

Croatia: language exam proposed for residence permit renewals

On February 5, the Government of Croatia proposed amendments to the “Foreigners Act, introducing multiple changes, including a mandatory language exam as a requirement for the extension of work and residence permits. Other changes include adjustments to procedures for international and temporary protection, administrative measures to streamline labour permits, and further digitalisation of processes.

Kazakhstan: a new pilot project amends the terms of permanent residence application
