Slovakia Introduces New National Visa and Work Permit Rules

From 15 July 2026, Slovakia implemented a package of changes to its immigration and employment rules for foreign nationals. One of the key updates is the extension of national visa validity from 90 to 120 days, giving applicants more time to complete residence permit formalities after arrival.

The reform also introduces longer grace periods for foreign workers who lose their jobs. Those who have held a residence permit for less than two years now have three months to find new employment, while those with longer residence can benefit from up to six months. Foreign nationals must notify the police of both the beginning and the end of their unemployment within five working days.

In addition, applicants submitting their first application for a temporary residence permit for employment will be granted 15 days to provide missing documentation if their application is incomplete.
