Hungary ends guest worker permit program

As of 6 June 2026, Hungary no longer accepts new applications under its Guest Worker residence permit programme, marking a shift in the country's approach to employing foreign nationals.

Individuals who already hold Guest Worker residence permits may continue to apply for permit extensions or reissuance. In addition, applications submitted and paid for by 5 June 2026 will still be processed under the previous rules.

The Guest Worker programme was introduced to facilitate the employment of foreign professionals involved in projects considered strategically important for the Hungarian economy. With its closure, Hungary is moving towards a more standardised employment-based immigration framework.

Going forward, most newly hired foreign employees will be expected to obtain a Residence Permit for Employment Purposes. This route requires direct employment by a Hungarian company under a local employment contract and payroll, replacing the previous Guest Worker pathway for new applicants.
