EU Extends Temporary Protection for Ukrainians until March 2028
In July 2026, EU member states formally agreed to extend temporary protection for people fleeing the war in Ukraine until 4 March 2028. The decision provides continued legal certainty for more than 4.3 million beneficiaries currently residing in the European Union under this status.
At the same time, new eligibility rules were introduced for future applicants. Temporary protection will now only be granted to new arrivals who can prove they comply with Ukrainian military obligations. This can be demonstrated, for example, by a passport with an official exit stamp or a document confirming exemption from military service. The restriction applies exclusively to new applicants and does not affect those already under temporary protection.
The extension reflects both the ongoing need for protection and Ukraine’s defence requirements. Member states are also continuing preparations for a coordinated long-term transition out of temporary protection when conditions allow.
