Sweden Eased EU Blue Card Rules for Foreign Professionals
Sweden introduced relaxed conditions for highly skilled foreign workers applying for the EU Blue Card, effective from January 1, 2025. The changes aimed to make it easier for qualified professionals to work in Sweden while also helping the country attract and retain top global talent.
Key Changes:
- Lower Salary Threshold
The salary requirement to qualify for the EU Blue Card was reduced from 1.5 times to 1.25 times the average gross annual salary in Sweden. - Broader Eligibility
Applicants who changed to another highly skilled job in Sweden no longer need to apply for a new Blue Card; they can simply notify the Migration Agency of their new employment. - Shorter Employment Contract
The minimum length of the employment contract required for the Blue Card was reduced from one year to six months. - Simplified Process for Existing Blue Card Holders
Professionals who held an EU Blue Card from another EU member state for at least 12 months are able to apply for the Swedish Blue Card through a simplified procedure.
