Romania and Bulgaria Join Schengen Area
Romania and Bulgaria officially became full members of the Schengen Area, marking a significant milestone after over a decade of anticipation. This decision follows the approval by EU ministers in December 2024, solidifying both countries' inclusion in the borderless zone.
As part of the accession, internal border checks between Romania, Bulgaria, and other Schengen member states have been lifted, allowing for seamless travel across these borders. Romania and Bulgaria had previously been integrated into the Schengen Area by air and sea in March 2024, but their land borders remained subject to checks until now.
