EU to Launch the Schengen Entry/Exit System (EES)

The European Union will launch the Entry/Exit System (EES) on October 12, 2025, introducing a new digital procedure for registering travelers entering and leaving the Schengen Area. The rollout will continue gradually until April 10, 2026, as member states upgrade border infrastructure and technology.

The EES will replace manual passport stamping with an automated biometric registration process. All non-EU nationals visiting Schengen countries for short stays (up to 90 days within any 180-day period) will have their facial image, fingerprints, and passport data recorded electronically upon entry and exit. This information will be stored for three years, or five years in case of overstays.

The new system aims to enhance border security, prevent overstays, and streamline data sharing between EU member states. However, travelers should expect longer processing times during the first months of implementation, especially at airports and major land crossings.

The EES will apply in 29 European countries, including all Schengen members plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. Ireland and Cyprus will not participate and will continue using passport stamps.
