Сzech Republic: Work Commencement Notification Timeline Tightened

Starting October 1, 2025, employers in the Czech Republic will be required to notify the Labour Office at least one day before a foreign employee begins work. Previously, notifications could be submitted on the employee’s first working day.

The penalty for non-compliance has also increased: as of September 25, 2025, fines can reach up to CZK 300,000.

This new rule means that companies must review and adjust their onboarding processes to ensure timely submission of notifications. Employers hiring foreign nationals will need to add extra lead time to internal workflows and consider setting up automated reminders or compliance checks to avoid last-minute issues.

Other obligations, such as notifications for changes or termination of employment and residence permit renewals, remain unchanged.

The change aims to prevent cases where inspectors find an individual working before proper notification, with employers later claiming that the inspection date was the person’s first official day.

Looking ahead, further Czech immigration reforms are expected in 2026. Planned updates include:

  • Making the EU residence permit mandatory for EU citizens staying in the country for more than 90 days.
  • Launching an online platform for permit applications, allowing most stages of the process to be completed digitally.
