OpenBalkans: New Work Permit System

Multiple updates have been introduced to the “Open Balkans” work permit system, initiated in March 2024 by Albania, North Macedonia and Serbia. Once fully implemented, this system will allow citizens of aforementioned countries to live and work within any of these countries without needing separate residence or work permits.

When did the system come into force?

  • Serbia: portal is operational

  • North Macedonia: portal is operational

  • Albania: not yet launched, is in developement

Key permit information

To apply, individuals need to obtain an Open Balkans ID number through an online government portal. The permit, valid for 2 years, allows the holder repeated entry and work rights within the participating countries.

It’s important to note that the permit does not extend work or residency privileges to family members, nor grants the possibility of applying for permanent residence, as per the conditions of holding temporary residence.

As the system becomes fully functional, an online portal will be available for individuals to view job opportunities and apply for them.
