EU Migration and Asylum Pact Enters into Force
On 12 June 2026, the European Union officially began applying the new Pact on Migration and Asylum across all Member States, marking the most comprehensive reform of the EU's migration and asylum framework in years.
As announced by the European Commission, the Pact introduces a unified approach to migration management by strengthening external border controls, harmonising asylum procedures, and establishing a permanent solidarity mechanism among EU Member States. According to the Commission, the new framework aims to balance effective border management with fair asylum procedures and shared responsibility across the EU.
Among the key changes are mandatory registration and security screening of irregular arrivals at the EU's external borders, faster border procedures for certain asylum applicants, shorter processing timelines, stricter rules for repeat applications, and updated reception standards across Member States. The new legislation also clarifies which Member State is responsible for examining an asylum application and introduces mechanisms to facilitate transfers between Member States where appropriate.
The European Commission noted that implementation of the Pact forms part of the EU's broader migration strategy, alongside the rollout of the Entry/Exit System (EES), enhanced border management technologies, and measures aimed at improving return procedures. According to the Commission, irregular border crossings have already decreased by 55% compared to two years ago.
