EU: Internal Border Checks Continue
Several Schengen countries continue to apply temporary controls at their internal borders, which may affect business travel and employee mobility across Europe.
According to the latest update, Germany and Poland have extended certain border checks until March 2027. Temporary controls are also in place in Austria, Denmark, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden, with different end dates between September and December 2026. Spain and Italy have also introduced temporary checks for arrivals from each other following recent developments in Ceuta.
What does this mean for travelers?
Border authorities may request identification documents and carry out additional checks when crossing affected internal Schengen borders. This may result in longer travel times, including for employees travelling between EU countries.
Travelers are advised to carry valid identification documents and allow additional time for journeys involving affected borders. Visa-exempt nationals should also continue monitoring their permitted stay in the Schengen Area, which is generally limited to 90 days within any 180-day period.
