EU Entry/Exit System Launches

The European Commission has confirmed that the new Entry/Exit System (EES) will officially launch on 12 October 2025, with a gradual implementation over six months across all EU and Schengen-associated countries.

The EES is a major upgrade to the EU’s border management processes. It will digitally track entries and exits of non-EU nationals traveling for short stays (up to 90 days in a 180-day period), replacing the manual passport-stamping system. The system will collect biometric data, including fingerprints and facial images, alongside standard travel information.

Authorities across Europe will use the EES to:

  • Identify overstayers more effectively;

  • Detect document and identity fraud;

  • Improve border security and streamline border checks.

The EES rollout is part of the EU’s broader Smart Borders package, which also includes ETIAS and the expansion of Automated Border Control (ABC) systems.

For companies managing international assignments or business travel, this marks a significant shift in travel procedures for non-EU employees and clients. Travellers can expect new processes at border crossings, with dedicated awareness campaigns launching at airports and border points to support the transition.
