Closer look on Serbian D visa: an ideal option for short term assignments

Serbia allows a visa-free entry for up to 90 days to more than 70 nationalities worldwide. Visa exempt nationals can enter Serbia based on their valid travel document – passport. The entry formalities are even more relaxed for certain foreign nationals, including EU citizens, who are allowed to enter Serbia based on their national ID cards – entry with ID cards is fully regulated by law and limited only to the specific nationalities. 

Visa validity, how to extend the period of stay

D visa allows foreigner to enter and stay in the Republic of Serbia for the period of 90 to 180 days. If longer stay is needed, foreigner should apply for a temporary Residence or Single permit in Serbia during validity of D visa.

A foreigner who, according to the visa regime, needs a visa to enter the Republic of Serbia and who intends to apply for a temporary Residence or Single permit in the Republic of Serbia shall obtain a visa for a long stay, called D visa.

D visa based on employment

According to the recent immigration law reforms that applied from 1st February 2024, D visa obtained on the ground of employment, self-employment and special types of employments, enables foreigner to stay and work in Serbia during validity of D visa.

Previously, before 1st February 2024, an additional work permit was needed for D visa holders if they intend to work in Serbia during duration of D visa. Above amendment is just one out of many that Serbian government recently implemented to streamline and speed up the immigration procedures for the foreigners.

How to apply and who can fill out the form

D visa application is submitted by the foreigner through the new government portal launched on 1st February 2024. Employers or third party authorized by employer can also submit the application on behalf of foreign employee however written authorization given by the foreigner is mandatory for such action.
