China eases visa-free transit rules
China has announced simplification of the visa-free transit rules for foreign citizens. The new changes have come into effect from December 17, 2024.
The permitted period for visa-free transit has been extended from a maximum of 144 hours to 240 hours (10 days).
Foreign citizens from 54 countries, including Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada, can use this regime when transiting through China to a third country.
60 checkpoints (including international airports) are open for visa-free transit and allowed areas of stay are appointed in 24 provinces such as Beijing, Shanghai, Shanxi, Anhui, and Hainan. In some regions, such as Hainan and Anhui, the transit stays zone covers the entire province.
Foreigners wishing to use visa-free transit must have proof of paid accommodations and tickets to a third country and from there back to the country of residence, as well as proof of hotel reservations in China for the entire transit period. During their stay in China, foreigners in transit must remain within the allowed zones of stay.
The new rules are aimed at simplifying cross-border travel, developing international cooperation and supporting the economy. The State Administration of Immigration of the People's Republic of China will continue to work to improve conditions for foreigners coming to China for work, study and travel.
